Making Things We Need
K-6
Exactly what is the division of labor and how does it contribute to a modern economic system? This film follows Mr. Wilson in his work as a supervisor of men who make and assemble telephones. The student learns that different men perform different tasks, and put together, this can provide all the services and products we need. When Mr. Wilson needs gasoline for his car, for example, he tries (unsuccessfully) to exchange a telephone for it. When he uses money, however, he points up the economic concept: Payment with money is really an exchange.

Your students learn how to set short term goals (for a stereo or a prom dress) and how to set long term goals (for a car or a house).
A detailed breakdown of taxes reminds students that they will not get all the money they expect from their paychecks and illustrates where the missing money goes. We follow Kate as she balances and reconciles her checkbook, thus demonstrating the basic principles of money management.
Finally, students learn about credit: how to get it, the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of credit cards, interest, and finance charges. The program concludes with an explanation of the Truth in Lending Law. A thorough and entertaining introduction to the basics of money management.

How does a nation dispose of its nuclear waste without causing devastation to the environment? Is deep ocean burial a safe and reliable method of disposal--or will radioactivity come back to haunt us in the food chain? Faced with the high costs of disposal, how can a country with little money balance the cost involved with its responsibility to its people and the people of the world?
These problems confront the former Soviet Union, where submarines full of spent nuclear fuel float, corroding, at dockside. The decommissioning program devised to attack the problem seems utterly inadequate to the task. The hour presents startingly forthright interviews with Russian officials, plus some disquieting information and pictures from behind the old Iron Curtain.
